GPR performed survey, design, permitting and construction administration
for an 18,000 GPD wastewater treatment plant using an emergent
groundwater discharge approach. The plant services a 24-hour critical
care facility with constant sewage flow. Design challenges included high
groundwater, fine-grained soils, and an accelerated permit schedule,
requiring close coordination with the Massachusetts Department of
Environmental Protection.
The wastewater treatment system was designed to produce effluent
having a total nitrogen level of less than 10 PPM. Four treatment stages
were constructed, including primary settling, BOD removal /
nitrification, anoxic denitrification, and UV disinfection. GPR also
designed a 7,200 SF leaching bed for effluent disposal to the ground.
The bed section includes a subsurface aggregate drain to carry treated
effluent to daylight and then to a surface discharge channel during
periods of prolonged high groundwater.
